Dozens of homeless people in New Orleans are packing up and moving into hotel rooms thanks to a nonprofit group.
For months, they've been occupying a tent city near the city hall.
UNITY of Greater New Orleans had hoped to persuade 100 people to leave for the temporary housing. But only 61 people took up the offer. About 200 are still living in pup tents in Duncan Plaza.
Homelessness in New Orleans has nearly doubled after Hurricane Katrina. The same is true of the cost of rent for an efficiency. Local providers say the storm washed away shelters, reducing the number of beds from more than 800 to about 200.
