At least three homes have been damaged and residents have been asked to evacuate because of a wind-whipped wildfire in a mountainous, rural area of New Mexico.

The blaze has charred about 12 square miles since it broke out early Monday. And it's damaged at least three homes, four outbuildings and some vehicles.

Officials say people in about 100 homes and on scattered ranches have been advised to leave. They say it's still too dangerous to put firefighters at the head of the blaze.

The cause has not been determined, but New Mexico officials say there's been no lightning in the area.
