The United States was largely spared during the 2007 tropical season even though the number of storms was above average. With only 10 days left in the season, the total number of named tropical systems has reached 14. This number exceeds the average yearly total of 10. Of the 14 named storms only 5 became hurricanes and only two of those became major storms with winds of at least 111 mph or greater sustained winds. The strongest storm to reach the United States was Hurricane Humberto which hit the upper Texas coast with winds of minimal hurricane strength.
We should be able to take a breather since the next tropical season does not begin until June 1, 2008. Let's hope we can be as fortunate next year.
