DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) -- The official death toll from a cyclone
that wreaked havoc on southwestern Bangladesh has climbed above
1,700.
Officials have struggled to compile a total because of disrupted
power and communication lines. The cyclone tore apart villages and
forced more than a million coastal villagers to evacuate to
government shelters.
Of the evacuees who have managed to return home, many are
finding their straw and bamboo huts flattened. Others sought refuge
with neighbors living in brick houses that withstood the storm,
which struck with 150 mile-per-hour winds on Thursday.
The full picture of the death and destruction remains unclear
due to communication and power problems
