Police near Detroit say a family's pit bull terrier fatally mauled a 1-year-old boy and the boy's father killed the dog.

Eastpointe police Lt. Darrell Corsi says the toddler was attacked Wednesday afternoon at his home in Eastpointe, just northeast of Detroit.

Corsi says the boy's father shot the dog to death with a handgun. The child was pronounced dead at St. John Hospital.

Corsi says no one else was injured. The names of the boy and his
father have not been released.

Police are investigating the attack. It wasn't immediately known
whether charges would be filed.

If you actually took the time to look up the information you will find that "pitbulls" have been responsible for less than 5% of fatal dog attacks, they are just the ones that get the media attention when an attack does happen. The owner of this dog did something to trigger this attack, either at the moment it happened or in the way he raised the dog. I own two "pitbulls" one is the american bull terrier and the other is an english staffordshire. I also own a black lab, and he has had more aggressive behavioral issues than either of my "pits". ANY DOG that does not get the interaction of other dogs and people can become a dangerous dog, furthermore an over-excited dog is just as dangerous. Dogs that jump up on people and "spaz" out and act hyper around people are in all reality expressing excited frustration that if not addressed, can lead to aggression. Most dog owners know very little about their pets and commonly mistake the signs that the animal has aggressive.

First, you need to determine what type of pit it was being that the "pitbull" is NOT a specific breed of dog. The american bulldog is a pitbull, the staffordshire is as well. Secondly, most pitbull breeds have been scored at 80% or higher from temperament studies (100% is completely docile in every way). If they investigate this further they are going to come up with evidence that this dog was not taken care of properly. Pitbull breeds are commonly high energy dogs and need room to run and need several daily walk to stop them from developing territorial issues. Furthermore, the american pit bull terrier is known for it's good human interaction abilities. These dogs are known to greet people with wagging tails and even smiles. There is no such thing as a bad dog, just bad owners. I am a dog behavioralist and deal mostly with aggressive or hyper dogs. PITBULLS HAVE BEEN THE LEAST OF MY WORRIES. A lab would have made the same attack. It was the owner, not the dog.
