Cape Carteret, NC

This Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 18, 2013, local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9960 will honor military personnel by hosting a public paddle fishing tournament on the White Oak River and Bogue Inlet waters. This tournament will feature individual cash prizes, as well as special recognitions for teams from active/reserve military units and veteran service organizations.

This is the first year for this Armed Forces Day tournament, but organizers intend to hold it on an annual basis.

“We are real excited about this event,” said Tournament Chairman Dr. Patrick Curley. “Not only are we honoring our veterans and families but we are celebrating the coastal waters and the rapidly growing sport of kayak fishing. Our intentions are for the coastal community to embrace this event as a way to reach out to our military families to and instill a passion for the beauty and recreational benefits of the area. We hope to make this a fun, family-oriented annual event.”

VFW Post 9960 will host the event and provide meals and facilities for all participants.

“As the largest organization of combat veterans, the VFW knows the importance of keeping veterans in touch with not only other veterans but also veterans’ organizations available to them throughout the community,” said VFW 9960 Commander Scott Vanderwerf. “What better way to do that than having some of those veterans organizations come together and provide a day for the veterans and the community to come together and celebrate Armed Forces Day.”

The public is invited to participate in the competition, and fishing will commence at 7 a.m. on the 18th. Tournament check-in will take place at 6 a.m. at the VFW’s post, located at 246 VFW Road, Cape Carteret, NC 28584. Fishing concludes at 2 p.m., with a Victory Celebration from 3 to 4:30 p.m.

Free t-shirts will be provided to participants who register prior to May 8.

If anyone in the community wishes to help sponsor this event, they can contact Curley at 910.340.3383 or visit the website for more detail on sponsorship information.

“This event will raise funds for our VFW; of which will be given back to veterans in need,” Vanderwerf said. “Eastern Carolina is home to some of the best fishing on the East Coast. Comradeship, fishing, food, and prizes – need I say more?”

Sponsorships will not only support local veterans’ service programs, but help pay for active duty military personnel to participate in the event.

“To me sponsorship is important; it gets the community involved with our veterans,” said Cpl. Josh Shakeshaft. “It allows the community to show they do appreciate what these men and women do on daily basis. Also it allows these men and women to experience something great. Not all the time do they have the money to go fishing.”

All proceeds from the tournament will benefit local veterans’ services such as the Marine Corps League, Heroes on the Water, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
