Join us for an Earth Day open house of science and family fun! The UNC Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese will host the event, offering various ongoing activities, and the chance to learn about many local organizations while exploring the facility. For the third year, an Earth Day celebration on the Outer Banks will encourage a large subset of the community to participate, including local businesses, in environmental education awareness.New to the event this year will be the incorporation of outdoor activities along the canal and wetlands at the Institute’s facility. Additionally, there will be ongoing presentations indoors. One room will feature a speaker series by local professionals, and another will feature a student film festival presentation.

There will be amazing raffle prizes available to win by participating in this event, you will not want to miss out! Each participant will receive a passport to complete during a journey through the Earth Fair; this can be used for one free entry into the raffle. Additional raffle tickets will be on sale during the event for $1. This event is free and open to the public and will take place rain or shine.

Port Discover’s Earth Day Festival!

Elizabeth City, NC — Port Discover’s 3nd Annual Earth Day Festival is set for Saturday, April 26th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at Elizabeth City’s Mariners’ Wharf Park. This year we will have a bike extravaganza theme, complete with a bike rodeo, bike maintenance station, bicycle powered activities, and more. Bring your bike and helmet to join in the downtown bike ride. The festival will include other Earth friendly activities like environmentally friendly living, recycling, water conservation, energy efficiency, renewable energy, and all natural products. This year will also include live music and Earth friendly food choices. Hands-on activities will be available and free to visitors. Celebrate Earth Day with us while learning about the environment in a creative, fun, family-friendly atmosphere. This event is partially funded by Vidant Health’s Community Benefits Program.

Port Discover is located at 611 East Main Street in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The science center’s hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm, and Saturday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. A hands-on science museum for the kid in all of us, Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits. Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of the Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. Port Discover is also a member of ASTC and the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.

On the Trail to Fitness
10:00 am to 2:00 pm Cost - $2.00 / participant
Combine your exercise program with a connection to Nature. Walk or run along the One-Mile Fitness Trail around four lovely ponds and workout at the 10 fitness stations. Or simply amble along the trail for a pleasant Saturday walk. For planning purposes please register by the day before.

April 4
Statewide Star Party: “Under a Carolina Moon”
6:00 pm till --- Cost – No Charge

Join with A Time For Science Nature and Science Learning Center and the Carolina Skies Astronomy Club to view the night sky and a waxing crescent Moon. A variety of telescopes will be available for viewing and later a guided tour of the spring constellations will be presented. Come early (around 6:00 pm) to: stroll the Solar System; Make “craters on the moon”; Spot Sunspots; Learn about phases of the moon and about lunar eclipses -- and more. Please register by April 3. Rain date April 5.

ECU graduate student Sean Gough will lead birders through the various habitats to view the fine feathered residents of the Bray Hollow Conservancy. For planning purposes, please advanced on-line notice of your intention to attend either of these activities through website registration or by leaving a phone message.

Visit the A Time For Science exhibit at KidFest 2014 for a stimulating experience for your preschooler that you can learn to duplicate at home.

April 8
Earth Day Expo at ECU Location -- ECU outside of Howell Biology Building.

ATFS will be among the exhibitors at the Earth Day Expo conducted by ECU’s Center for Biodiversity. Learn about “The Great Sunflower Project” and plant a sunflower to take home. This is a Citizen Science project that is helping scientists study the bee population problems.

April 12

See the début of ATFS’s planetarium with the showing of SOLAR QUEST, a fulldome planetarium short feature that demonstrates how the Sun and Earth are interconnected and that we are "Living with a Star.” Visit the booth at Pirate Fest to learn more about A Time For Science.
2. Second Saturday Family Fun Day
9:00 am to 11:00 am Cost - $5.00 adult $3.00 child
Take a guided spring-time walk along one of the Conservancy trails then become engaged in a nature craft. Please register by April 11.
3. “Lookiting” at the Birds Location – Sylvan Heights Bird Park in Scotland Neck, NC
10:00 am -- 3:00 pm Cost – No Charge after admission to the park

Spend time “Lookiting” (observing) the many colors and hues that make our fine feathered friends such objects of beauty. Increase the fun of your tour at Sylvan Heights Park as you look for colored feathers that match the colors of the spectrum. Keep a record of your finds and show it at the end of your tour for a Certificate of Participation.

April 19
Global Youth Service Day
10:00 am -- 3:00 pm Cost – No Charge
Organized by Love A Sea Turtle Foundation, join with employees of Sheetz Convenience Stores in a clean-up of Little Contentnea and Contentnea Creeks. You MUST register on line for this event by April 16.

April 22
Earth Day - Every Day - All Day
6:30 am -- 6:00 pm Cost - $10.00 per car
Activities will be going on all day long. See the website for details. Car-pool with a group, bring a picnic and stay all day. Start early with both bird and frog walks. Learn to take care of your organic garden with biochar and take home some recipes for fresh produce therefrom. Take an afternoon meditation walk and/or a stroll through the Solar System. Build a “worm hotel” watch a film about the “Father of Wild-life Biology” and walk where the deer roam.
