Tobs Seeking Home Run Derby Participants
The Wilson Tobs are looking for 11 and 12 year old baseball players to compete for a spot in the Conference Carolina's Home Run Derby on Wednesday April 13 at Wilson's Fleming Stadium. The first 40 11 and 12 year olds to register with to Tobs will compete in a Little League Home Run Derby on April 11. The top six will then compete with players from Conference Carolina schools in the Fan Fest before the conference's tournament at Fleming Stadium.
The little league home run derby will be held at the little league fields behind Fleming Stadium on Monday, April 11 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. Each contestant will have a quick round of batting practice then will have five outs in the competition. An out consists of any swing that does not result in a home run. The six players who have the most home runs after five outs will be teamed with a Conference Carolina school at the Fan Fest home run derby on Wednesday April 13 at Fleming Stadium that will begin at 7:00 pm. The little leaguers who are not in the top six will have the opportunity to roam the outfield at the Conference Carolina home run derby to collect the outs during the competition. To register to compete in the little league home run derby, email Mandi@wilsontobs.com, or call the Tobs at 252-291-8627.
For the first time the Conference Carolina Home Run Derby will be a team competition. Each participating school will select two players for the contest and will be teamed up with one little leaguer. The teams will be placed into two pools, tournament seeds 1, 3, and 5 in pool A and seeds 2, 4, and 6 in pool B. The teams in each pool will compete in round one with the top teams in each pool advancing to the championship round.
In all rounds each batter will have five outs to hit as many home runs as possible, with an out consisting of any swing that does not result in a home run. Conference Carolina players must hit the ball out of Fleming Stadium for it to be a home run while a temporary fence at little league dimensions will be set up to measure home runs for the youth players. In the case that two teams are tied in pool play, or that the championship round ends in a tie, one college player from each team will have an additional five outs to hit as many home runs as possible to break the tie. At the end of the night one team will be crowned the 2011 Conference Carolina Home Run Derby Champions.
"The Tobs are excited to host the Home Run Derby and give the teams and community a chance to engage in a fun event together" said Tobs assistant general manager Mandi Nichols. "Anytime you gather kids, families, college baseball, and the community, with a home run derby you are in for an exciting evening. What could be better than to see college players and little league players cheering each other on at the plate and encouraging and building up the game of baseball?"
Nichols will be coordinating the home run contest and derby.
Gates to the Fan Fest will open at 6:00 pm and the Home Run Derby will begin at 7:00 pm. Admission to the Fan Fest is free. The 2011 Conference Carolina baseball tournament will begin on Thursday, April 14, at Fleming Stadium. Admission is $10 per day and a tournament pass is available for $35 on the first day.
