News from Port Discover: Northeastern North Carolina’s Center for Hands-On Science
“Egg to Chicken” at Port Discover’s Afterschool Science on May 23!
Elizabeth City, NC — Mason Lawrence from the 4-H will be teaching an exciting class on embryology during “Egg to Chicken,” Port Discover’s Afterschool Science on Thursday, May 23, at 4:00 pm. We will take a close up look at chicken eggs as they begin to develop into little baby chicks.
Afterschool Science is Port Discover’s free, interactive science program featuring a different and timely topic each month. Afterschool Science is made possible thanks to the City of Elizabeth City.
Port Discover is located at 611 East Main Street in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The science center’s hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm, and Saturday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. A hands-on science museum for the kid in all of us, Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits. Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of the Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. Port Discover is also a member of the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.

Craven County Recreation and Parks is teaming up with New Bern High School for a Summer Youth
Basketball Camp. Camp is scheduled for June 17-20 for boys and girls age 8-12. Camp is from
9:00am-1:00pm, Cost for the camp is $60 in advance and $65 the day of the camp. Everyone who

The Craven County Youth Girls Volleyball camp is being held July 8-July 11. Girls age 8-11, camp
is 9:00am-12:pm. Girls 12 and up is 1:00pm-4:00pm. The camp will be held at H.J. MacDonald

Craven County Recreation and Parks is sponsoring a golf camp. The camp will be held June 10-13 at the
Emerald and is open for boys & girls ages 7-14. This camp will run Monday-Thursday from 8:30-12:30.

CAMP BUTTERFLY

Camp Butterfly, a one-day grief camp for children and teens, will be held on Friday, June 21, 2013 in Jacksonville. This camp is sponsored by the Foundation for Hospice and is free of charge to all participants.
It is open to any child who has experienced the loss of a loved one whether a relative or a close friend. Camp Butterfly provides opportunities for children ages 5 through 16 to interact with peers who have experienced similar losses. Trained bereavement counselors will lead campers in activities to help them to understand their grief and teach them coping skills.
Deadline for campers’ registration is May 31st. Also, volunteers are needed to assist in all areas. Please call 910-455-3925 to register a child or to volunteer. Space is limited.
The Foundation for Hospice is a nonprofit organization which provides financial assistance plus grief and loss support to terminally ill persons and their families. For more information, call Iris Foreman at 910-455-3925.

1st Friday Kids Art-In:
Children must be age 5 - 12-years-old to participate. Space is very limited and reservations are encouraged. Cost is $10 for first child and $5 for each additional child (per family). Port Discover Membership is Required (Yet you can purchase a membership at the door)

Color Splash Summer Camp
Color Splash summer camp is a unique, total-art immersion, summer program for kids in the 6th-8th grades who LOVE art! Campers will be encouraged to experiment, to seek out their own artistic interests, and learn at their own pace while being challenged to broaden their horizons. Color Splash will have two (2) four week sessions (June 17-July 12, 2013) & (July 15- August 9, 2013)). The camp will operate 9am-4pm daily at West New Bern Recreation Center.

This camp is for ages 6-12. Y.E.S Camp activities include bowling, skating, swimming, arts and crafts, movies, field trips and much more.
