Be A National Park Service Junior Ranger!

Celebrate National Junior Ranger Day – April 26, 2014

Power of Archaeology2 cover photoBarclay Trimble, Superintendent of the Outer Bank Group, invites children to take part in National Junior Ranger Day on Saturday, April 26 by visiting the three national parks found on the Outer Banks. “Children can explore the rich history and setting of the Outer Banks—and the importance of protecting this place—by becoming a Junior Ranger.”

Designed for ages 5 to 13, children can become three different kinds of junior rangers along the Outer Banks: a Seashore Ranger at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, a Roanoke Ranger at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and a Flight Ranger at Wright Brothers National Memorial.

At Cape Hatteras National Seashore, children become Seashore Rangers by completing the booklet, which is available at any visitor center. Special Junior Ranger stations will be set up at the Hatteras Island Visitor Center (10:00-11:00 a.m. and 3:00-4:30 p.m.), the Bodie Island Visitor Center (10:30 am-Noon and 2:30-4:00 p.m.), and the Ocracoke Visitor Center (10 a.m.-Noon and 1:30-3:30 p.m.).

Children visiting Fort Raleigh National Historic Site can earn a Roanoke Ranger badge by attending a ranger program and completing the booklet. The Underground Railroad Junior Ranger badge can also be earned by completing a different booklet. A special program on the NPS Arrowhead’s meaning will be at the visitor center (offered all day).

Children can earn a Flight Ranger badge at Wright Brothers National Memorial when they complete their booklet and attend one ranger program. Special programs include one on the NPS Arrowhead’s meaning at the reproduction 1903 hanger (offered all day) and one about the Wright brothers’ kite experiments and flying a kite (10:30 a.m.).

Children who cannot visit a national park site in person are invited to take part in the national “WebRangers” activities at On WebRangers, kids can explore more than 40 activities, view park webcams, and share their park stories and pictures.

National Junior Ranger Day is part of National Park Week, April 19–27, 2014.
