Onslow County Public Library Is Gearing Up for Summer Reading 2014! Fizz, Boom, Read!

(Onslow County) Onslow County Public Library (OCPL)- Onslow County Public Library is helping to jump start your summer by gearing up for its summer-long reading program, Fizz, Boom, Read!, featuring programs, events, and prize giveaways for infants, children, and teens. Every year, Onslow County Public Library hosts Summer Reading with the goals of encouraging children and teens to hone their reading skills, provide families with the resources to make reading and learning a shared experience, and to provide access to fun and free events during June, July, and August. This annual event also helps battle the “summer slide;” the proven learning loss or educational backsliding that can occur during breaks from school. This year’s theme will allow us to explore science, technology, and innovation through literacy. We will have interactive programs, hands-on experiments, and guest speakers, as well as special family programs for all ages. In addition to individual reading logs, there is also a system-wide goal for our participants: a cumulative total of 10,000 reading hours! To begin this summer’s program, OCPL is hosting a free Summer Reading Kick-Off Event at all branch locations. We will have Mad Science from the Triangle, face-painting, games and more! This event is made possible through the generous support of the Onslow County Public Library Endowment, which is administered by the North Carolina Community Foundation (NCCF) and the Friends of the Onslow County Public Library.
The free Summer Reading Kick-Off Event will start on the lawn of the Swansboro Branch library on Tuesday, June 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; Sneads Ferry Branch Library on Wednesday, June 18 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; and Richlands Branch Library on Thursday, June 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The Main Branch in Jacksonville will host their Kick-Off on Saturday, June 21, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Summer Reading runs June 17 through August 8, 2014. Registration is open and ongoing throughout the summer. You can register online through our website or register in person at any of our branch locations. Participants must be registered to be eligible to win prizes. All Summer Reading programs and events are free and open to the public. For more information, please call your local branch library, or visit OCPL online anytime at Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to keep up with all our fun programs, events and news!
