Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County

The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read author, John Corcoran will make an appearance in Beaufort County at 11:00 a.m. on March 25, 2014 in the Auditorium at Beaufort County Community College. The free event is co-sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church of Washington and Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County. Mr. Corcoran, who read only at a second grade level until the age of 48 managed to graduate from high school and college and to work as a high school teacher and real estate developer without being discovered. He has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, 60 Minutes, CNN, Tavis Smiley Show and has become a national spokesperson for adult literacy. In 1997 he started his own foundation, The John Corcoran Foundation to make a way for anyone to learn to read. He has also written and published another book A Bridge to Literacy . You can read more about his life and experiences at www.johncorcoran.org He will also be appearing in Raleigh, New Bern and several other North Carolina cities while on this tour. Greene Lamp Head Start Now Accepting Pre-Kindergarten Applications For 2014-2015 School Year

309 Summit Ave and 1001 E. Highland Ave in Kinston Snow Hill office located at 110 S. E. First St.
Greene Lamp Head Start is now accepting Pre-Kindergarten applications for the 2014-2015 school year for children in Lenoir and Greene Counties. The child must be three or four years of age by August 31, 2014. Transportation is available to children enrolled in the program based on need and availability.

Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 4:00pm.
To complete the application, the following items are required:
-Proof of child’s birth (i.e. Birth Certificate)
-Proof of Income for 2013 (i.e. tax return, W-2 form, TANF, SSI, child Support).

A Time For Science Nature and Science Learning Center - March Events

A Time for Science Nature and Science Learning Center (ATFS) is located off Highway 11 between Ayden and Grifton in Contentnea Creek Estates. The physical address is 949 Contentnea Lane, Grifton NC 28530.
Follow the website and newsletter regularly for possible additions or other updates to this schedule. For weather dependent activities (such as star parties, etc.), check the website for possible cancellations before leaving home.

Love A Sea Turtle Annual 5k Run & Nature Walk

Proceeds fund summer camps at A Time For Science Nature and Science Learning Center for underserved youth as well as turtle awareness and education. $20.00 for individual runners ($25.00 after Feb 1) and $5.00 for the Nature Walk. Participants can register on-line at loveaseaturtle.com or runtheeast.com.

On the Trail to Fitness
10:00 am to 2:00 pm
Cost - $2.00 / participant
Combine your exercise program with a connection to Nature. Walk or run along the One-Mile Fitness Trail around four lovely ponds and workout at the 10 fitness stations. Or simply amble along the trail for a pleasant Saturday walk.

Cost - $5.00 adult $3.00 child
Take a guided walk along one of the Conservancy trails then make a “pin-less” pinwheel for fun in the winds of March. Please register by March 7.

Enjoy the A Time For Science / Ulster Project float in the Second Annual Greenville St. Patricks’ Day Parade.

Busy Body Builders
Location – Pitt County KidFest, Greenville Convention Center
10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Visit the A Time For Science exhibit at KidFest 2014 for a stimulating experience for your preschooler that you can learn to duplicate at home.

Carolina Skies Astronomy Club – Spring Equinox Star Party

Following the big Turtle Run in the morning the astronomy Club will hold its annual Spring Equinox Star Party at 7:00 pm. Come a little early to watch the sun go down in the west, one of only two time during the year it sets in the west. The indoor program will be announced on the A Time For Science website. Please register by March 21.

3rd Annual “Birds in Harmony”

Harmony Hall 109 E. King St. Kinston, NC
The Lenoir County Historical Association is sponsoring the 3rd Annual “Birds in Harmony” birdhouse show, sale and exposition. This will be at Harmony Hall which is located at 109 E. King St., Kinston, NC, across from the Lenoir County Courthouse. The dates are 3/25-4/6.

This will end with the Southern Brunch on Sunday 4/6. This brunch will be from 11:30AM to 2:00PM. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for children. Tickets for the brunch can be obtained by calling Harmony Hall Site Manager, Judy White at 252 522-0421.

The show includes, not only birdhouse, but birdfeeders, birdbaths and most other things related to birds. You are encouraged to exhibit your craft by calling Judy White, Harmony Hall Site Manager, at 252 522-0421. Please contact Judy by 3/18. The exhibit will not be open on
Mondays and Sundays(except for 4/6) from 10:AM-4:00PM
