AARP TAX-AIDE PROGRAM ONGOING
AARP TAX-AIDE PROGRAM ONGOING
The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program is going strong at all four Carteret County and Havelock area locations. Volunteers have been IRS-trained and are currently helping taxpayers’ to complete and electronically file their Federal and State tax forms at no cost.
The program is sponsored by AARP, in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service; however, you do not need to be a member of AARP to receive assistance. Moreover, although the program is funded with special attention and emphasis to those taxpayers age 60 and older, the volunteers will gladly help younger taxpayers with low to moderate incomes who feel that they cannot afford the services of a professional tax preparer.
Tax-Aide volunteers are available on the applicable days until the filing deadline at the following locations:
• Carteret County Public Library, 1702 Live Oak St, Beaufort; Tuesdays & Saturdays from 9am to 1pm
• Western Carteret Library, 230 Taylor Notion Rd, Cape Carteret; Mondays & Wednesdays from 9am to 1pm
** We will not be available March 17, 19, 24, and 26, but instead will be open March 18, 21, 25, and 28
• Havelock Senior Center, 103 Trader Ave, Havelock; Mondays from 9:30am to 1:30pm
• Leon Mann Senior Center, 3820 Galantis Dr, Morehead City; Thursdays & Fridays from 9am to 1pm
We would like to remind married taxpayers that both spouses need to be present to sign the tax returns before they can be electronically filed. If a spouse is unavailable to sign the return, the filing of the returns will be delayed until the return is taken home, signed by the spouse, and returned to the location so that a volunteer can verify that the form has been signed.
All taxpayers are reminded to bring the following items in order to have their tax return prepared:
• Picture ID for taxpayer and spouse
• Social Security Card for all individuals on the return
• Last year’s tax return
• All documents pertaining to income
• All documents / receipts pertaining to expenses such as medical, tax, charity, and business
• Any childcare expenses including provider name and ID number
• Checkbook or other official bank document showing bank account and routing number for direct deposit
• Two copies of any Power of Attorney, divorce decree allowing dependent claim for tax purposes, and complex broker statements if appropriate
For more information call Traci Torrie, District Coordinator, at 910-326-6239.
