The Center for Biodiversity and Department of Biology at East Carolina University will host an Earth Day Expo with interactive events for people of all ages. Various ECU researchers and local non-profit organizations will have activities available on topics related to biodiversity. There will be live animals and plants, lab activities, natural history story times, and more! We will also have a special visitor this year – Sid the Science Kid from UNC TV’s Just for Kids! Kids from various after school programs will be attending and the public is welcome! Last year we had over 300 kids participate! Check in at the breezeway of Howell.

Prepare for an awesome day! The 12th Annual Karate Madness Open Championship will be at Kinston High School Gymnasium on Saturday, March 28 in Kinston, NC from 9:30AM to 3PM.
This is the martial arts tournament that you don’t want to miss! Competitors of all ages compete against some of the best from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and other states.
With exciting displays of martial arts skills from both children and adults, face painting, coloring stations, food and more, it’s an event that’s awesome for the entire family to enjoy!
Again, this dynamic Championship will take place Saturday, March 28, 2015 at Kinston High School from 9:30 AM to 3PM. New Bern High School
The New Bern Parks and Recreation Department is beginning registration for our Hershey’s Track and Field Program. Boys and Girls ages 9 to 14 can participate. We will be hosting a local meet in June at New Bern High School. Winners will advance to the Eastern Region Meet to be held in June in Havelock N.C. First practice meets on April 22nd for participants to prepare for their events.
Some of the events include: 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, standing broad jump and softball throw. Parents may sign up their child at the West New Bern Recreation Center, located at: 1225 Pine Tree and pay a $5.00 fee.
Parents may also download the form from www.newbern-nc.org and bring it to the center.

The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read author, John Corcoran will make an appearance in Beaufort County at 11:00 a.m. on March 25, 2014 in the Auditorium at Beaufort County Community College. The free event is co-sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church of Washington and Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County. Mr. Corcoran, who read only at a second grade level until the age of 48 managed to graduate from high school and college and to work as a high school teacher and real estate developer without being discovered. He has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, 60 Minutes, CNN, Tavis Smiley Show and has become a national spokesperson for adult literacy. In 1997 he started his own foundation, The John Corcoran Foundation to make a way for anyone to learn to read. He has also written and published another book A Bridge to Literacy . You can read more about his life and experiences at www.johncorcoran.org He will also be appearing in Raleigh, New Bern and several other North Carolina cities while on this tour. Elizabeth City, NC — Fast forward through the rock cycle at Port Discover! Students learn how rocks are formed by creating their own sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous “rocks.” “Geology Rocks” Port Discover’s Afterschool Science on Thursday, February 27th, at 4:00 pm.
Afterschool Science is Port Discover’s free, interactive science program featuring a different and timely topic each month. Afterschool Science is made possible thanks to the City of Elizabeth City.
Port Discover is located at 611 East Main Street in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The science center’s hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm, and Saturday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Programs can be arranged at other times for special groups.
A hands-on science museum for the kid in all of us, Port Discover is a community-based, non-profit organization, established to enhance the public’s understanding and enjoyment of science through engaging programs, activities, and exhibits. Elizabeth City State University along with the Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce initiated the project that has attracted broad community support, including Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, College of the Albemarle, Albemarle Hospital, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools. Port Discover is also a member of ASTC and the NC Grassroots Science Museum Collaborative.

Greene Lamp Head Start is now accepting Pre-Kindergarten applications for the 2014-2015 school year for children in Lenoir and Greene Counties. The child must be three or four years of age by August 31, 2014. Transportation is available to children enrolled in the program based on need and availability.
