Jake Owen - Appearing Live at Harrah's Cherokee Event Center

JAKE OWEN
Appearing Live at
HARRAH'S CHEROKEE EVENT CENTER

Saturday, September 27, 2014

His roots are fairly easy to describe. Jake Owen was raised in the coastal town of Vero Beach, FL. He and his fraternal twin Jarrod grew up in the sand and surf. Both boys attended Florida State. That's where music became Jake Owen's true focus. He suffered a severe shoulder injury while wake boarding. This ended his days on the university's golf team. During his recuperation, his left arm was in a sling. Jake realized that even with his arm in a sling, he could hold a guitar so he started playing guitar and writing songs

After his recovery, Jake became a regular club entertainer. He quit college just shy of graduation to make his pilgrimage to Music City. Then he was catapulted into the country-music spotlight. Now comes the real work.

In 2005, Jake went from performing in Florida bars to moving to Nashville and within months he had a Music Row song-publishing contract. Less than a year later, he was signed by RCA Records and was on the charts with his first two singles, "Yee Haw" and "Startin' with Me." He went from being a speck in a stadium crowd at a Kenny Chesney concert to opening shows for the superstar. Then Brad Paisley took him on the road as Owen scored his third hit, 2007's "Something About a Woman." In 2008, Owen opened shows for Sugarland and Keith Urban in 2011.

Alive at Five Concerts Move to Jaycee Park

Starting on Friday, May 2nd, the Alive at Five free concert series will move its location to Jaycee Park, 807 Shepard St. on the Morehead City waterfront. Tom Kies, executive director of the Downtown Morehead City Revitalization Association (DMCRA) said, “We’re going to try something a little different this summer. We loved having the concerts at Katherine Davis Park but it was always a logistical challenge. Jaycee Park has a stage, bathrooms and power and it’s an absolutely beautiful waterfront location. Just like in past years, the Alive at Five concerts are free and family-friendly.”

Dependable Taxi will be the first band to play, on Friday, May 2, from 5pm to 8pm at Jaycee Park. Dependable Taxi is made of up local, long-time musicians who are amassing a large, loyal following. Rob Blackwell on vocals and guitar, Andy Wright on drums and vocals, Mark Hibbs on guitar, Timmie Raynor III on bass and Will Weltman on keyboards specialize in ‘soulful rock’ and in getting a crowd on their feet and dancing.

North Carolina native, Emily Minor will be the headlining act at the second Alive at Five Concert taking place on Friday, June 6th. Known as the fresh new face of country, Ms. Minor first grabbed attention when she was in the top fifty finalists of Fox’s hit series, American Idol. She’s currently living in Nashville where she’s writing and recording music. Emily Minor’s self-titled EP is a lively collection of convincing stories, undeniable emotions and astounding vocals that is as honest and lovable as Ms. Minor is herself. Having written four out of the six recorded songs, Ms. Minor is quickly catching the interest of new listeners and impressing significant members of the music industry.

Then, on Thursday, June 19th, Spare Change rocks the waterfront. Spare Change, based in LaGrange, NC got their start in 2002 as a 4 piece group made up of friends. Traveling throughout the southeast, Spare Change has grown into one of the most sought after bands in the market. Playing Rock, Country, Beach, Funk, Rap and Classic Rock, Spare Change is always a crowd pleasing hit.

Liquid Pleasure comes to Alive at Five on Thursday, July 3rd. The Liquid Pleasure band has been playing for over twenty years and has toured with Hootie and the Blowfish and REM. They’ve been paired with Chuck Berry, Eddie Floyd and Ben E. King and then later with Whitney Houston, the Four Tops, the Temptations and Aretha Franklin. Liquid Pleasure performed at President Bill Clinton’s Inaugural Ball as well as President George W. Bush and for events for the Ravens football team as well as the Panthers and the Hornets. Liquid Pleasure will get you dancing with their extensive song list encompassing Beach Music, Rock, Top 40, Motown and all the standards that crowds love. For more information go to the band’s website www.liquidpleasureband.com.

Then performing on Thursday, July 17th, the Mikele Buck band, an Eastern North Carolina based band that was formed in 2003 by lead singer/songwriter Mikele Buck. The Mikele Buck band has shared the stage with such nationally renowned acts as Aaron Tippin, Joe Nichols, Jeff Bates, Trent Tomlinson, Bucky Covington, and most recently Jason Aldean.

On Friday, August 1st, Band of Oz returns to take the Morehead City waterfront by storm.
The Band of Oz was originally formed in 1967 as a part-time band playing fraternity parties and high school proms all over the South. In 1977 the band went on the road full time. Since that time the band has made an exceptional name for itself throughout the Southeast by playing the top clubs and corporate parties and getting excellent reviews along the way. For several years the group has been a guest on most of the major beach concerts in the Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia.

The band recorded their first song, Shaggin’, in 1978. It has become a beach classic. In 1982 at the Beach Music Awards, the Band of Oz was presented with an award for Best Group and one of their songs, Ocean Boulevard, was voted Best Beach Record of that year. In 1984 the band released Keep Keeping It Up, their first album. One More Step, their second album, was released in the summer of 1989. 1995 brought the release of the band’s third album, Let It Roll, one of the most successful beach music records of all time.

At the 1995 Cammy Awards, Let It Roll took album of the year and Shama Lama Ding Dong was named song of the year. The band also walked away with Group of the Year. At the 1996 awards, the band took home awards for Best Ballad and Best Live Recording. The Band of Oz again received an award for Best Group and was inducted into the Beach Music Hall of Fame at the 1997 Cammy Awards.

Then Jupiter Jones kicks off the Labor Day weekend. Jupiter Jones, a five piece band that won Best Band by Greenville’s Mixer Magazine three years in a row, will rock the downtown Morehead City waterfront on Friday, August 29th. Jupiter Jones is comprised of experienced, multi-talented former members of other local bands like Spare Change and the Victor Hudson Band. They play an entertaining mixture of rock, country, beach, 80’s, 90’s and dance music from the oldies up to today’s hottest hits. The band makes good use of violin, guitar and keyboards along with both female and male lead singers.

The Alive at Five concerts are sponsored by R. A. Jeffrey’s and Bud Light, the Boathouse at Front Street Village, Collins, Inc. at Front Street Village, Crystal Coast Boats, Bob 93.3, WRNS 95.1, Wells Fargo, Twice the Ice, Potash Corp of Aurora, Chalk and Gibbs Insurance, Portside Marina, Sound Bank, Starling Marine, Trident Funding and Coastal Press. The concerts are hosted by the Downtown Morehead City Revitalization Association (DMCRA). Beverages will be available, no coolers allowed.

The DMCRA is a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring Morehead City to a vibrant economic, cultural, historic, social and recreational center. In conjunction with the City of Morehead, the DMCRA stages the Morehead City July 4th Fireworks program as well as the Christmas parade and the Crystal Coast Boat Show. In 1991, the Spin Doctors released their full-length debut album Pocket Full Of Kryptonite, co-produced by Peter Denenberg and Frankie LaRocka. Relentless touring and a wave of positive press kept the album alive into the next year, when sales began to increase dramatically. Kryptonite was certified gold in September 1992 and received an additional boost from the band's October appearance on "Saturday Night Live." Reaching the one million mark in January 1993, Kryptonite entered the Billboard Top Ten one month later. By June 1993, the album was triple platinum and had breached the Top Five among Billboard Pop Albums while spinning off two major hit singles: "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" and the No. 1 Rock radio song of 1993, "Two Princes." Ultimately, Pocket Full Of Kryptonite sold over five million copies in the US and another five million overseas.

The Gin Blossoms, their namesake the caption from a W.C. Fields photo, signed their first record deal with A&M in 1991 - "Up And Crumbling". In 1995, "Til I Hear It From You" appeared in the film Empire Records' and helped fuel its platinum sound track. Dare County Arts Preps for Second Annual Rock the Cape Festival

at Koru Village’s Beach Klub in Avon

Dare County Arts Preps for Second Annual Rock the Cape Festival

On Friday, May 30 the Dare County Arts Council will host the second annual Rock the Cape festival from 4-10pm at Koru Village’s Beach Klub in Avon.

Rock the Cape is a festival to benefit the Dare County Arts Council. The fundraiser will celebrate life on the water’s edge and will feature local music, artists, a raffle, food, drinks, a kids’ zone, and live art.

"As artists, we are excited to participate in the second annual Rock the Cape. With the success of last year, we anticipate great things,” said Joe and Kris Caroppoli from Caroppoli Fine Art & Photography.

North Carolina surf rock legends Southern Culture on the Skids will return for their second show on Cape Hatteras to headline Rock the Cape.

“Hey Outer Banks we (SCOTS) can't wait to get back to Koru’s Beach Klub for the Dare County Arts Council Fundraiser. It's gonna be rockin' grooves for surfing feet with the deepest reverb on the beach. All for a cause that can't be beat! Good times guaranteed,” said Rick Miller from Southern Culture on the Skids.

Tickets for the event are $12 in advance and $18 at the door. Tickets are available now online at brownpapertickets.com and will be available soon at select locations.

Outer Banks band Eddy and the Rip Tides, Virginia’s Cashmere Jungle Lords, and students from the Dare County Arts Council’s Community School program will be playing throughout the day.

“Cashmere Jungle Lords is pleased to participate in Rock the Cape. It's an excellent opportunity for us to give something back to a community that has given so much to us. We feel blessed to be able to support the Dare Country Arts Council's mission and perform again with our old friends, Southern Culture on the Skids,” said lead singer, guitarist, and chief songwriter of Cashmere Jungle Lords Dominic Carpin.

April 4th & 5th - 7pm
April 6th - 3pm
April 11th & 12th - 7pm
April 13th - 3pm

History - In 1989, Patricia O'Quinn Warren, found Artistic Productions Incorporated, a non-profit organization, to provide quality dance performances in rural Eastern North Carolina communities. The repertoire has transitioned from an annual to biennial production of The Nutcracker to annual productions of Dance for Christ.

What is Dance for Christ? Dance for Christ (DFC) is a ministry used to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ through dance. The production features various genres of dance-ballet, lyrical, tap, jazz, and hip-hop. Dancers become the vessels which put God in the spotlight. As believers, the mission is to bring honor and praise to Jesus Christ and to open up the hearts and minds of non-believers to God's word in a way that is both relevant and truthful. Each dance piece tells a story or demonstrates God's unfailing love and mercy.

The Founder - Patricia O.Warren, founder and artistic director, was trained in her early years by her mother, Ellen O'Quinn, a principal and soloist with the Metropolitan Opera House in West Germany. Warren later studied at the Joffrey Ballet in New York, the North Carolina School of the Arts and the Cusack Ballet in Los Angeles. She has performed throughout the United States and abroad. It was during her battle with breast cancer, that the vision of Dance for Christ was born. Her desire was to use the art of dance as a ministry. The mission would provide a wonderful celebration to reach one more for Jesus and to "change lives...one dance at a time."

Tickets: $10/Each. $8/each for Military and Seniors 65+ (This $8 discount applies to the Saturday matinees at 1:30pm ONLY).

Dolly Parton performs at the Harrah's Cherokee Event Center for the first time!

An internationally renowned superstar, the iconic and irrepressible Parton has contributed countless treasures to the world of music entertainment, penning classic songs such as "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors," and her mega-hit "I Will Always Love You." With 1977's crossover hit "Here You Come Again," she successfully erased the line between country and pop music without noticeably altering either her music or her image. "I'm not leaving country," she said at the time, "I'm just taking it with me."

Making her film debut in the 1980 hit comedy 9 to 5, Dolly earned rave reviews for her performance and an Oscar nomination for writing the title tune, along with her second and third Grammy Awards. Roles in Steel Magnolias, Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Rhinestone, and Straight Talk followed, along with two network television series, made for television movies, network and HBO specials, and guest-starring roles in series television. In 2006, Dolly earned her second Oscar nomination for "Travelin' Thru," which she wrote for the film Transamerica.
