The Teacher Who Couldn’t Read author, John Corcoran will make an appearance in Beaufort County at 11:00 a.m. on March 25, 2014 in the Auditorium at Beaufort County Community College. The free event is co-sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church of Washington and Literacy Volunteers of Beaufort County. Mr. Corcoran, who read only at a second grade level until the age of 48 managed to graduate from high school and college and to work as a high school teacher and real estate developer without being discovered. He has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, 60 Minutes, CNN, Tavis Smiley Show and has become a national spokesperson for adult literacy. In 1997 he started his own foundation, The John Corcoran Foundation to make a way for anyone to learn to read. He has also written and published another book A Bridge to Literacy .
