IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERTED ISLAND AND COULD ONLY TAKE ONE ITEM WITH YOU, WHAT WOULD IT BE?: A genie to grant me three wishes.
Phillip joined WITN after being chief meteorologist for another local television station for 21 years. Phillip grew up in Rocky Mount, North Carolina and knew he would become a meteorologist at around the age of 5 or 6. "Meteorologist" was the first big word he learned. As a young child, he fell off his older brother's bike right before a hailstorm hit with golf ball sized hail. He and the weather were both upset and he felt they were somehow connected. Phillip learned all he could about the weather after that. He listened to his Grandfather Williams tell stories about sun dogs, August gusts (hurricanes), and the big snowstorms of the 1920s.
Phillip earned a BS degree in Meteorology from North Carolina State University in 1987 and was awarded as the Outstanding Graduating Senior in Meteorology. Phillip became the chief meteorologist with the CBS station in Greenville in 1988. In 1998, Phillip shared his fascination with weather by teaching a "Weather and Climate" course at East Carolina University while continuing his television career. One of the highlights of that time was being invited to the White House to attend a seminar on global warming and hear private speeches by the President and Vice President. Phillip attended several international weather conferences and has represented coastal North Carolina at a Governor's Hurricane Conference.
In 2009, Phillip shifted gears and became a Realtor. Recently, he joined Pirate Homes and Realty in Greenville. Phillip has helped more than 40 families buy homes.
For fun, Phillip loves sports, mainly as a spectator. He has been commissioner of his fantasy football league for nearly 15 years. Phillip also has some tennis trophies he won many years ago. He says they have collected a lot of dust. Phillip loves music, trading stocks, surf fishing, movies and watching meteor showers.
You can see Phillip present the weather forecast on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at noon and 5:30pm on WITN.
