Federal health officials are warning an HIV drug comes with the risk of a rare, but potentially deadly liver disorder.
The Food and Drug Administration says it has received more than 40 reports of the disorder since Bristol-Myers Squibb's Videx was approved in 1991. Four patients died from bleeding or liver failure after developing the problem.
The issue arises when there is dangerously slow blood flow through the liver, which can cause veins in the esophagus to burst.
The FDA says it's keeping Videx on the market, because its benefits outweigh the risks. The drug prevents HIV from multiplying.
New labeling on Videx says patients should be monitored for early signs of the problem during routine medical visits.

To Newport: What about the people that get HIV through blood transfusion, guess it is there fault to? Or health care workers that get exposed through no fault of their own other than doing their job?
WOW what a catch 22...its like saying well we have to use a clean and sterile needle when we execute someone.....every drug has a side effect and some side effects are deadly...however, does the benefit outweigh the risk, and with the exception of certain cases of HIV (use your head for which ones) if you would practice safe sex and safe drug use and get educated and believe the info is out there and it is FREE!!!! you would not have to worry about what side effects your HIV drug has.
