The State Bureau of Investigation has agreed to give almost $4 million to a former North Carolina death row inmate who sued after he spent nine years behind bars before being acquitted at a new trial.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that documents made public Thursday show the SBI agreed to the settlement with 35-year-old Alan Gell, who was sentenced in the 1995 killing of Allen Ray Jenkins of Aulander.

The settlement was made on behalf of SBI special agent Dwight Ransome, who was the lead investigator in the case. SBI Director Robin Pendergraft says Ransome now works in an administrative job and won't conduct other investigations.

Ransome declined to be interviewed.

Gell is serving a five-year prison sentence for indecent liberties for having sex with a 15-year-old girl after he was freed.

TO HEY - Unfortunately for Officed Tyndall, Dwight Ransome didnt conduct the investigation of her charges. I do however admire your blind loyalty to her. After all, loyalty is a trait we all look for in choosing a pet.

You spend time in prison for something you did not do and let see if it needs to be priority? Who cares if he blows it? The state blew how many years of his life by keeping him behind bars? Why should they (The state) be able to dictate what house he buys or car he drives? Everybody gripes about what their tax dollars are paying for, and now we have paid for a man to be in prison for how many years, and now we have to pay for him to be compensated for being innocent????? People are worried about such frivolous things and are bashing law enforcement because "their" tax dollars pay for this and "their" tax dollars pay for that! Well how does it feel for "our" tax dollars, 4 million of them to be spent on this, not to mention the money it took for the trial?? I see a deputy arrested for giving beer to a 20 year old and a man goes to prison who is innocent due to a negligent officer and where is his mugshot???? Is he going to be charged? What is the world coming too!
