Player Of The Week: Fighting The Odds

Tyree Dawson hasn't been down the easiest road playing football, in fact he has had one of the biggest hurdles to cross, recovering from being hit by a car while riding his bike.

"My seventh grade summer I was going to school to play basketball and a car hit me from behind, said Dawson. In the hospital they found out I had a fractured skull, I had to get surgery to put a steel plate in my head."

Not many seventh graders who hope to play high school football have to think about recovering from such a tramatic injury but Dawson seemed to keep his positive attitude and do just that. Out his eighth grade year he came ready to play at West Craven High School. Dawson has started both his junior and senior year and holds one of the highest grade point averages on the team.

"Thats what we want, said Eagles head coach Kevin Yost. We want our kids to be champions in the hallways,on the streets and the field. He is a class act. You can't ask for more than that."

When asked when he decided to pick football as his sport Tyree laughed and explained it wasnt exactly his choice.

"When I was little my brother made me play football, said Dawson. I did not want to play he made me play."

And now Tyree is thankful for his brothers pressure. With another great season at West Craven and rushing for over 1,000 yards there is not much more you can expect out of Dawson. However, he always seems to be that kid on the team that smiles and cuts up with teammates and he still can get the job done.
