Player Of The Week: Battling Back After Cancer

With the start of school just around the corner, another fall sports season is already underway. One volleyball player at Washington High School in Beaufort County is excited and grateful to be back in the action.

It was about this time last year when 16 year-old Haley Hiatt faced a challenge greater than anything she would see on the court. She was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease, a type of cancer, after discovering a lump on her neck.

Haley remembers being in disbelief when her parents told her the diagnosis. "It was just overwhelming and I was like you're lying to me. This is not happening."

Coach Tara Hunter says Haley remained strong and upbeat through it all. "We rallied around her and supported her throughout the time. We adjusted. But it was difficult at the time."

Hailey got the good news last November that she is cancer free. And as she tries to help her team towards victory this year, she also has some advice for others going through their own adversity. "I learned a lot about life and trying to live your life to the fullest. Start caring more about other people and not about yourself."

As you can imagine, there are a lot of medical bills from what Haley has been through. Her mom says the community has rallied around her.
