Plymouth Falls In State Title Game

The Plymouth Vikings couldn't keep up with Winston-Salem Prep Saturday in the state championship game in 1A boys high school basketball as the Phoenix grabbed a 61-49 win.

Plymouth was led on the floor by junior Carl McCray who tallied a game-high 14 points. He was named MVP for the runner-up team.

Winston-Salem Prep had several guys in double figures including Mike Hughes who was named overall MVP.

I just want to let my nephew, Kendrick Pitt, know how very proud I am of him and the remainder of the Plymouth High School Vikings for their accomplishments. Although you fell short, you can still relish the moment as a team and say we reach the ultimate goal; an opportunity to play for the State Championship. I will only add, that all that stand an chance to return next year, should have a fire burning in their belly and do what is necessary in the off season to do so. Again, congratulations and job well done. Go Vikings!!!!

I must say that the Vikings played a great game!! They always play as a team and to me they are still #1. Carl, Adrian, Pitt, Spruill, and the rest of the players...there's always next year if God"s will!!!!

Coming from a Williamston High Alum (Class of 95) I was hoping Plymouth would have taken the title back to the 252. From what I have heard and witnessed,it seems as if now Plymouth is in a whole different league in athletics than the rest of the four rivers schools, including the new Martin County Schools, Manteo, Perquimans, and Northside High.

I'm so proud of you guys! Although this wasn't the year for a state championship, I've got this feeling that next year will be! With all the starters being juniors this year, a championship in your senior year will be all the sweetest. I think I speak for your whole community when I express my admiration and pride for your accomplishments.

Proud of the Team u represented yesterday, though next year please leave the nasty atitudes towards your head coach decision making home with your parents and stop treating to leave n go to Greenville b/c it affects the whole team A-Z. The head coach has enough to worry about wouldn't you say.

Plymouth Vikings have played a great season and nothing to be ashamed of. You all did a great job and made it to the state finals. Second place is nothing to frown about. Lots of others didn't make it anywhere near that far. Hold your heads high and be proud of your accomplishment. The residents of Plymouth are proud of you. You were welcomed home just like the football team was a few years ago when they took the state championship..with lights, sirens, dignity, honor and lots of smiles and tears. Great Job Guys..go get em next year!!

I was honored to broadcast the game for the local radio station in Plymouth. I thought it was a great game but took me back to the college games of the 70s when the leading team just dribbled away the last 6 minutes. Plymouth was only down 5 when WSP went into a stall. After doing football all season I will say the town of Plymouth should feel honored to have them represent our town. Agreat group of well behaved kids!!!!
