Player Of The Week: Todd Gurley

Tarboro High School running back Todd Gurley is hoping to lead his Vikings to a third consecutive 2-A State championship before heading off to an ACC or SEC school for college.

Last season Gurley put up huge numbers on the field both on offense and defense in route to being named the most valuable player of the 2-A state title game. Gurley rushed for nearly 1,500 yards and 26 touchdowns. He scored a touchdown passing and receiving and also scored twice on kickoffs.

On Defense Gurley had 79 tackles, an interception and a forced fumble.

While he is certainly a force on the football field, Todd Gurley is also a track star at Tarboro High School recently running for Team USA at the World Youth Championships in France.

I have had the oppurtunity to watch this young man play and as a former coach and trainer I believe this young mans talent is natural and cannot be taught. We would love to have someone of this caliber on our field along with Keith Marshall of Raleigh. Both players are extraordinary talented men that would fit in 1A-4A programs. Players like Mr. Gurley and Mr Marshall come through once maybe twice a lifetime in highschool programs. Todd has really represented the town of Tarboro with his track and field success competing on national and international levels. Looks like those playing Tarboro will need a rocket to catch this kid. On film he does not appear as fast until you see him in person and trust me with speeds like this it will not take him long to get to the other end of the field. To all those helping Todd i would ask that you help to keep him grounded mentally and balanced physically. I look foward to making trips to the county to watch Mr Gurley and to Raleigh to see Mr Marshall but thats only when the Butler Bulldogs are off the field. I wish both these players and their schools the best as the gear up for their season.

The 2A Eastern Plains Conference probably the toughest conference for high school football in the state. We have 2 teams from Pitt Co in this conference, wish them luck, it's a tough, tough conference.
