Williamston Suffers Only Loss In State Title Game

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Megan Buckland led Kernersville McGuinness with 15 points to defeat Williamston 55-46 for the Class 1-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association women's basketball championship Saturday.

It was the fifth-straight state title for the Villains (23-7), who won despite playing the final nine and a half minutes without their star junior guard. Buckland went out with injury to her left knee, but not before she was named MVP of the title game for the second-straight year.

Sammi Goldsmith added 14 points and Erin Fitzgerald scored 11 for McGuinness.

Williamston (29-1) was in its third state title game and is still looking for a women's title in any sport.

Future ECU Lady Pirate Katie Paschal led all scorers with 18 points while Zakkeya Morris added 13 for the Tigers.

Williamston, Baker's center of all human existence, Holy City and home of the greenclad snowflakes and mounds of cocoa puffs.

Who had the pleasure to have the great cornhole in there school? How many state titles did you lead them to?

They are not my Redskins "original Tigresses". I didn't go to school there. When a school with 150 kids beats a school with 450 kids by any margin, the school with the 450 got owned. Do you still have 450 or has your number wallowed down even further?

Hey corn... have we been through this discussion before? Parmele you say, talk to your redskins about three beatens. Got owned....by a tip in at the buzzer in ot.

tigresses, you may want to send that step up message to your boys team! They got owned by Columbia. How many students go to Columbia High...150? I guess all they needed was six or seven to school you.

Well, "Proud Team mom" your books are a little out of balance. They got smacked in Chapel Hill by a far superior team. Therefore, they cannot be number one. Perhaps number 2. You will get the taste of mediocrity back in your mouths next year. Katie is gone.

Our girls is still the best and we had a TEAM...not just Katie!! She's a great player, but she didn't do it all by herself! The sad part is u people dislike a child thats good at something....shes a sweetheart she only have a love for ball and she love her teammates dearly! Stop down talking our girls and step ur girls game up!!! WHS girls are still number one in my book!!!

I am not joking! Williamston may be a dying, run down, slummy shell of it's former self, but it is still my hometown, center of all human existence. I know that in twenty years Williamston will have totally transformed from the classic small but vibrant town of 8,000 souls that it was 40 years ago, into a complete, impoverished ghetto. Hey, we are almost there now. But in the next 10 to 20 years my kids will graduate and leave and I will retire to Dare County where the culture hasn't diminished to the lowest of the low. Dare County isn't wrapped up with project dwellers, people without the core values of work, church, marriage and common decency. I will be retired there, walking tall, chest out, proud, mustache thoroughly waxed, just as I now do here. Williamston will be the former center of all human existence, where the mistakes of our government and "feel good" culture were manifested to show us what not to do again. Baykha!!!!

How could anyone live in Martin County without having the Williamston Tigers on their mind? With arrogant, overbearing fans and residents of that school enrollment area constantly crowing about themselves and a rag of a newspaper spewing the hometown bilge like a sick whale, who could miss it? Who else beats up on an opponent who represents a school less than half their size, then jumps around, brays like a mule and thumps their chest like they just beat somebody 5 times their size. Only in the Holy City of Williamston, Center of all Human Existance as Baker calls it. I often wonder if that guy is joking or not.
