CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) -- Davis Whitfield, an associate commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference, has been selected to become the next executive director of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association.
The 39-year-old Whitfield will succeed Charlie Adams, who has been executive director since 1984 and part of the association since 1967. Adams has announced his retirement, which takes effect at the end of January 2010.
Norm Loewenthal, director of the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education at the University of North Carolina, made the appointment after a university committee conducted a search.
The NCHSAA has been part of the university since 1913.
Whitfield has been with the ACC for the last seven years. He has served on the commissioners executive staff and manages 22 sports and 21 conference championship events.
