Rocky Mount Picked To Win Big East 3-A Football Crown

Thanks: Charles Alston

WILSON - Despite having to replace its entire offensive and defensive lines, Rocky Mount is still the choice of the Big East 3-A Conference coaches to win its 2009 football title.

Also add in the fact that the Gryphons have a new head coach (Dickie Schock).

But an abundance of talented athletes including the return of most of the backfield that nearly made the NCHSAA 3-A state championship game last season was enough to give the Gryphons the coaches' nod in voting Wednesday at the league's annual coaching meeting at Hunt High School.

Rocky Mount, 13-2 in 2008, received three first place votes and 22 points total for first place in the polling. The newest team in the conference, Hunt, got second place in the poll with one first place vote and 20 total points.

Southern Nash, with 14 starters back, got a very weird combination of votes. The Firebirds got two first place nods, but also garnered a last place vote and finished third in the poll with 18 points.

Nash Central was fourth with 13 points followed by Wilson Fike (11 points) and Northern Nash (5 points).

1. Rocky Mount (3) 22 pts.
2. Wilson Hunt (1) 20 pts.
3. Southern Nash (2) 18 pts.
4. Nash Central 13 pts.
5. Wilson Fike 11 pts.
6. Northern Nash 5 pts.
