ECU Women Earn No. 5 Seed In C-USA Tournament

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women’s basketball team claimed the No. 5 seed in the 2014 Conference USA Tournament which will be held in El Paso, Texas. The tournament will begin on Tuesday, March 11, however, the Pirates earned a first-round bye and play in the second round on Wednesday, March 12 at 1:30 p.m. (MT). ECU will take on the winner of the No. 12 Rice-No. 13 FIU game.

The Pirates will enter the tournament with a 22-7 overall record and a 10-6 conference mark. As the No. 5 seed in the C-USA Tournament, East Carolina has put together a 3-2 record. This year, ECU looks to win four in a row to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

“We’re excited that we were able to get a bye in the Conference USA Tournament,” head coach Heather Macy said. “Ultimately, the team that wants to extend their season will typically do better and I think we have a lot of kids who have that as their motivation and their drive.”

All 16 Conference USA institutions will compete in the C-USA Tournament. The top four seeds earned a double bye and will play in the quarterfinals on Thursday, March 13. No. 22 Middle Tennessee (26-4, 15-1 C-USA) earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament, while Southern Miss (24-5, 13-3 C-USA) secured the No. 2 seed and UTEP (23-6, 12-4 C-USA) and Tulane (20-9, 11-5 C-USA) claimed the No. 3 and 4 seeds, respectively.

The No. 5, 6, 7 and 8 seeds received a first round bye and will begin competition on Wednesday, March 12 in the second round. Charlotte (15-14, 9-7 C-USA) earned the No. 6 seed, while Old Dominion (16-14, 9-7 C-USA) is the No. 7 seed and UAB (15-14, 7-9 C-USA) locked in the No. 8 seed.

The first round of the tournament will feature No. 16 seed Marshall (10-19, 3-13 C-USA) versus No. 9 seed Florida Atlantic (16-13, 6-10 C-USA) at 11 a.m., followed by No. 13 FIU (12-17, 6-10 C-USA) against No. 12 Rice (13-16, 6-10 C-USA) at 1:30 p.m. The evening games will begin at 5 p.m. with No. 14 Louisiana Tech (10-19, 5-11 C-USA) versus No. 11 North Texas (12-17, 6-10 C-USA), concluding with No. 15 UTSA (13-16, 4-12 C-USA) against No. 10 Tulsa (12-15, 6-10 C-USA) at 7:30 p.m.

The opening three rounds will be played inside legendary Memorial Gym before moving across the street to the Don Haskins Center for the semifinals and championship game. Both venues are located on UTEP’s campus.

Second round tip times mirror opening day as Wednesday’s games start with No. 8 UAB facing the winning of the FAU/Marshall matchup, followed by fifth-seeded East Carolina taking on the winner of Rice/FIU in the afternoon. The evening session games will feature No. 6 Charlotte vs. North Texas or Louisiana Tech, while No. 7 Old Dominion will face the advancing team from the Tulsa/UTSA game.

In Thursday’s quarterfinal round, the league’s top four teams will be in action as No. 1 seed Middle Tennessee opens the day at 11 a.m., followed by No. 4 seed Tulane. Host and No. 3 seed UTEP takes the court at 5 p.m., followed by No. 2 seed Southern Miss at 7:30 p.m.

First, second and quarterfinal round games on Tuesday, March 11, Wednesday, March 12, and Thursday, March 13 will air on the C-USA Digital Network. The Friday semifinal games will be shown on CBS Sports Network at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. CBS Sports Network will also broadcast the championship game on Saturday at 6 p.m.
