RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina State is hoping new coach Dave Doeren can provide a jolt to a program struggling to sustain momentum in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The school hired Doeren away from Northern Illinois after firing Tom O'Brien after six seasons. His staff spent the spring installing a no-huddle offense that Doeren said blends elements from Wisconsin and Oregon. The coaches have pushed both sides of the ball to work at a faster tempo.
The most pressing challenges are finding a new quarterback and replacing three starters from the offensive line, while the defense lost its top four tacklers from last year.
Doeren says he saw "a lot of bright eyes" early in training camp and that the players are working with the right mindset in the new scheme.
