RUSTON, La. – Junior starting pitcher Caroline Umphlett spun her third complete-game shutout in as many starts to lead the East Carolina softball team to a 1-0 victory over Louisiana Tech in the rubber match of a Conference USA series on Sunday afternoon.
Umphlett (8-5) scattered just four hits and issued just two walks to go with two strikeouts on the day and became the first East Carolina pitcher since Toni Paisley in 2010 to record three-straight complete-game shutouts.
ECU (25-18, 12-9 C-USA) put together its first scoring threat of the game in the top of the fifth inning after a one-out double by Jordan Lewis and an infield single by Jill Jelnick, but the Bulldogs were able to induce a pair of groundouts to escape the jam and keep the game scoreless.
In its next chance to swing the bats, the Pirates got a one-out triple off the bat of Shelby Johnson, before Abby Wynne delivered a two-out RBI single down the left field line to score the game’s only run.
Louisiana Tech (19-30, 7-13 C-USA) got a one-out double in its final at-bats in the bottom of the seventh, but Umphlett remained poised in the circle by retiring the final two hitters to seal the victory.
East Carolina will return to the field on Wednesday, April 30 when it travels to Harrisonburg, Va., for a non-conference doubleheader at James Madison.
