UNC Suspends LB Hughes After Assault Charge

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina has suspended linebacker Travis Hughes from the team after he was charged with assault on a campus parking attendant.

Team spokesman Kevin Best said the altercation happened Thursday morning outside of Hughes' campus residence, leading to his arrest and immediate suspension from all team-related activities.

Hughes started 11 of 12 regular-season games and was the team's fifth-leading tackler with 76 tackles. He missed the Belk Bowl win against Cincinnati due to a knee injury.

UNC police spokesman Randy Young didn't immediately return an email seeking details of the incident from The Associated Press on Thursday night.
