South Central's Danielle Butts Signs With UNC

CHAPEL HILL --- The University of North Carolina women's basketball program signed four high school seniors to National Letters of Intent, head coach Sylvia Hatchell announced Wednesday.

The four members of the class of 2015 are Whitney Adams of Naperville, Ill., Megan Buckland of High Point, N.C., Danielle Butts of Winterville, N.C., and Brittany Rountree of Jacksonville, Fla.

"We are very pleased to have these outstanding young ladies join the Carolina basketball family," Hatchell said. "In addition to being standout players, they are all great students and even better people. They have all either won or played for state championships and they have the winning mentality that we value. They will be tremendous assets to our team and our University."

Adams, who attends Montini Catholic High School, is a 6-1 guard/wing. Among the top 100 players in the country according to ESPN HoopGurlz, All-Star Girls Report and Blue Star Basketball, Adams led her team to an IHSA Class 3A state championship in 2010.

"Whitney Adams is a versatile player that can play both out on the wing and down in the post," Hatchell said. "She can handle the ball, shoot the three and she is a very strong rebounder. She is an all-around great player."

Ranked the No. 35 wing in the country by ESPN HoopGurlz, Adams was selected to the 2009-10 ESPN RISE Underclass All-American girls basketball team. She averaged 9.5 points and 6.1 rebounds for a Montini squad that finished 33-2 her junior year.

Buckland, who attends Bishop McGuinness High School, is a 6-0 guard. Ranked the No. 16 guard in the country and the No. 54 player overall by ESPN HoopGurlz, Buckland led her team to back-to-back 1A state championships in 2009 and 2010.

"Megan Buckland is a natural leader on the floor," Hatchell said. "She is a long, athletic guard that can create a matchup nightmare with her size and strength. She can score at will but she also loves to play defense and is a standout defender both on and off the ball."

A finalist for North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year honors, Buckland was a first-team all-state selection by the Associated Press and the Greensboro News & Record and Winston-Salem Journal Player of the Year. She owns single-season school records for points, three pointers and free throws attempted and led all players in North Carolina with 80 threes as a junior.

Butts, who attends South Central High School, is a 5-9 wing. A member of the 2010 NC Preps All-State team and the NCBCA District 3 and 3A Coastal Conference Player of the Year as a junior, Butts averaged 19.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.

"Danielle Butts is an outstanding athlete and very quick," Hatchell said. "She is a great passer who sees the open court well and is a threat on both ends of the court. Her ability to create for her teammates and take the ball to the hole is exceptional. She is a defensive stopper who runs like the track star that she is."

In addition to owning school career records for points and rebounds, Butts was the MVP of the state 3A track championship, winning the triple jump, high jump, 4x100 and 4x200 meter relays. Ranked the No. 14 wing by ESPN HoopGurlz, Butts is ranked the No. 79 player in the country.

Rountree, who attends The Potter's House Christian Academy, is a 5-7 1/2 guard. The most valuable player of her team that won the 2010 NCSAA national championship, Rountree is ranked the No. 10 point guard in the class and the No. 53 overall player in the country by ESPN HoopGurlz.

"Brittany Rountree is a versatile guard who can play both the 2-guard and point positions," Hatchell said. "She is a great shooter and tenacious defender. She is a coach on the floor and a force both offensively and defensively."

Rountree averaged 18 points, 6.3 rebounds, 5.7 steals and 6.7 assists per game as a junior. In addition to being NCSAA champions, Potter's House was the 2010 FAAZ Magazine Next Level All-Star Champions.
