Pirates Set For Second Spring Football Scrimmage

GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina completed its 11th workout of the spring with a shells-only outing Friday afternoon on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Complex. The weather-shortened 70-minute practice also served as a polish session for the Pirates' second intra-squad scrimmage scheduled for late Saturday morning at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

Similar to last week, ECU Head Coach Ruffin McNeill will oversee a 90 to 100-play script that should provide another live, full-pad evaluation opportunity for personnel on all three levels of ECU's current depth chart.

"I'm looking for better execution on all three sides of the ball and for us to accomplish our penalty goal of two or fewer," McNeill said. "I want our offense to take care of the ball and I want our defense to get takeaways, so that's fine line you walk as a head coach during scrimmages.”

McNeill also indicated he was looking forward to seeing the continued development and acclimation of players who are in unfamiliar roles learning new positions. In addition to the three earlier defensive moves (Michael Dobson to free safety, Desi Brown to inside linebacker and Terrell Stanley to end), there's been some late shifting on offense as well. J.T. Boyd (former center) and Tre Robertson (former guard) have each moved over one space and are currently working at guard and tackle, respectively, while inside receiver Quataye Smyre has gotten added repetitions at a thin running back position.

After Saturday's game, the Pirates will have just two more weekday afternoon workouts remaining before completing its spring schedule with the playing of the Purple-Gold Game on April 20.

NOTES: The start of Wednesday's practice was delayed 40 minutes because of lightning and the team period was conducted in a steady rain ... QB Shane Carden made the most of the wet conditions, throwing a pair of touchdown passes to OWRs Reese Wiggins (73 yards) and Jabril Solomon (37) ... He also hit IWR/TE Justin Jones with a 35-yarder ... DE Terrell Stanley applied plenty of pressure on that side of the ball with three whistle-blown sacks, while fellow DE Lee Pegues added another tackle for lost yardage ... After missing last week's scrimmage because of a left shoulder injury, DE Chrishon Rose will sit out Saturday's contest with an injured right knee ... Approximately 60 coaches representing high school programs in North Carolina and South Carolina arrived on campus Thursday night to participate in ECU's three-day coaching clinic, which feature offensive, defensive, special teams and strength/speed presentations by all members of the Pirate staff ... In addition to observing Friday's practice, the high school coaches will also be in attendance during the scrimmage.

Next Workout: Saturday, April 13 (10:45 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.)
Remaining Workouts: April 15, April 17 and April 20 (Purple-Gold Game, 2:30 p.m.)
