Pirate Women Fall To Navy 57-48

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Britny Edwards led the Pirates with a double-double, but East Carolina’s efforts at a comeback were halted by Navy’s stout defense as ECU dropped a 57-48 decision to the Midshipmen at the Navy Classic Friday night at Alumni Hall.

Britny Edwards tallied a team-high 14 points and 11 rebounds for her third double-double of the season and added three steals, two blocks and a pair of assists. Freshman Colleen Marshall came off the bench and tied her season-high with nine points, a pair of rebounds and an assist. Whitny Edwards contributed eight points, seven boards, three steals and an assist, while Celeste Stewart posted six points, four assists, and two boards in the setback.

The first half saw an offensive struggle from both teams as the Pirates and Mids’ respective defenses were solid. East Carolina (5-2) was limited to 27.6-percent shooting, while Navy (5-3) was held to 38.1-percent shooting to bring the halftime score to 20-18 in favor of the Midshipmen.

The contest was a back-and-forth affair which featured five tie scores and seven lead changes. The two squads countered each other’s buckets until the game was knotted at 23-23 at the 18:15 mark of the second half. Navy’s Alix Membreno broke the tie with a layup and that seemed to be the turning point in the game as the Mids went on a 9-0 run to take a 32-23 lead over the Pirates.

Despite their efforts, the Pirates were unable to regain the lead as ECU trailed the rest of the game. Navy led by as many as 10 points (43-33), but East Carolina clawed its way back into the contest and cut the Mids’ lead to four on three separate occasions. With 43 seconds left in the game, the Pirates were down by four (51-47) and head coach Heather Macy called for a timeout. In an effort to get the ball back, ECU fouled Jade Geif who sunk both her free throws to push Navy’s lead to six (53-47). As East Carolina continued to foul the hosts, the game slipped further and further away from the Pirates and the Midshipmen were victorious by a score of 57-48.

Navy was led by Membreno and Geif who combined for 37 points as Geif poured in a game-high 19 and Membreno tallied 18. Geif finished the contest with a double-double as she added 11 rebounds, which was also a team-high.

East Carolina looks to get back on the winning track when the Pirates face Monmouth Saturday, Dec. 1, at 3:30 p.m. in the Navy Classic. The meeting marks the first ever between the two squads. Live stats for the contest will be available on ECUPirates.com.
