GREENVILLE, N.C. – Kristine Mial collected her first double-double of the season and led a quartet of Pirates in double-figures as East Carolina rolled past Southern Miss, 82-60, to mark its highest scoring conference game of the year. The Pirates used a second half offensive surge, in which they shot 61.5-percent from the field to lead by as many as 23 and claim the win.
Mial finished the game with 19 points and a career-high 12 rebounds to notch the second double-double of her career and the first of the season. Additionally, the junior forward added two assists, one steal and one block while shooting 50-percent from the field, 33.3-percent from beyond the arc and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Whitny Edwards added 15 points, three assists, two steals and as many boards, while Kyani White tied her career-high with 12 points, four assists, two rebounds, and one steal. Celeste Stewart notched 11 points, five boards, three assists, and one steal in the victory.
White got the game started as she hit a three at the 19:04 mark to give ECU (18-6, 8-3 C-USA) a lead it would never relinquish. White was on fire in the first half as she tallied all 12 of her points in the frame. The Pirates would hold Southern Miss (12-12, 4-7 C-USA) at bay and would not allow the Golden Eagles to even tie the game as ECU led by as many as 13 in the first half. The Pirates would go into the locker room at the half with a solid lead, 36-27.
The first four buckets of the second half came from beyond the arc as both the Pirates and Golden Eagles countered each other until a trey from Mial set in motion an 8-3 run to give ECU an 11-point advantage (47-36). The Pirates’ offense was hot in the second half as they shot 61.5-percent from the field and led by as many as 23 late in the game.
The Pirates used a 9-0 run, followed by a 13-0 run to extend their lead to 23 (76-53) with 3:10 left in the game. Despite Southern Miss’ efforts, the Pirates controlled the offensive pace and closed the game on a 4-0 run for a final of 82-60.
The Pirates shot 46.8-percent in the game and forced the Golden Eagles into 19 turnovers. ECU collected 12 steals and the Pirate bench outscored the Southern Miss bench 38-10. The Pirates were a perfect 9-for-9 from three-point range in the second half and finished the game shooting 88.9-percent (16-for-18) from beyond the arc. ECU tallied 19 points off of turnovers and held the edge in rebounds, 41-32.
Southern Miss was led by Tanecka Carey, who scored a team-high 17 points after connecting on 5-of-9 three-point field goals. Jamierra Faulkner added 15 points to go along with a game-high nine assists, three steals and one rebound. Jerontay Clemons contributed a team-best seven boards, six points, four assists and three steals.
ECU will hit the road for a conference match at Marshall on Thursday, February 21, at 7 p.m. (EST). The two squads faced each other earlier this season and the Pirates defeated the Thundering Herd, 54-47, at Minges Coliseum.
