Lady Pirates Come Up Short At UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Whitny Edwards and Britny Edwards scored in double-figures, but the ECU women’s basketball team came up short in a 62-58 loss at UAB on Thursday night which snapped the Pirates’ five-game winning streak.

Whitny Edwards led ECU (16-6, 6-3 C-USA) in scoring with 17 points, just one shy of her season-high, while adding three rebounds and two steals. Britny Edwards added 10 points, a team-high seven rebounds, three assists and one steal. Janesha Ebron came off the bench and tallied nine points, four boards, four steals, and one assist, while Kyani White recorded eight points, a team-best five assists, two rebounds, and a steal. Tatiana Chapple posted six boards, four points and an assist in the setback.

In the first half, the Pirates led by as many as 10 (27-17) with less than six minutes left in the frame. The ECU defense was solid, once again, as it did not allow the Blazers (14-8, 5-4 C-USA) to score a field goal for nearly eight minutes. During that time, the Pirates went on an 11-1 run in which they trailed 16-17 at 11:03 and ended up with a 27-18 lead with less than four minutes in the first half. Despite the 10-point deficit, UAB fought back and chipped away at ECU’s lead and eventually cut the Pirates’ lead to two (31-29) at the half.

Whitny Edwards tallied 14 points in the first part of the contest to contribute to nearly half of the Pirates points in the frame as she was on an offensive tear sinking 6-of-8 field goals and 2-for-3 three-pointers in the first half.

The second half started with UAB’s Ashley Grimes tying the game at 31 and the half would go onto see two ties and three lead changes. The two squads battled each other point-for-point and ECU regained its final lead of the game (56-55) at the 3:26 mark. From there, UAB took a one-point lead on a jumper from Amber Jones and never looked back. Despite the Pirates’ efforts, the Blazers did not allow them any closer than two points and UAB went on to defeat the Pirates, 62-58.

Grimes led all scorers with 31 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal. Jones added 14 points, six boards, five assists and a pair of steals. Karisma Chapman led UAB with eight rebounds and contributed six points, four steals, and three assists.

The Pirates look to get back on the winning track when they return to Minges Coliseum on Thursday, February 14, when they host Conference USA leader SMU. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
