MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Katie Paschal, who helped University of Mount Olive post a pair of double-digit conference road wins last week and extend its winning streak to six games, has been named Conference Carolinas Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. Paschal becomes the second Trojan this season to win the award, joining Joneiqua Gary, who won in December.
A 5-8 senior guard from Williamston, N.C., Paschal shot 64.0 percent (16-for-25) from the field and averaged 18.5 points and 4.5 assists. She tallied 18 points and four assists as Mount Olive avenged an early-season loss with a 78-53 win at King. Her three-point play capped an 11-2 run to open the game as the Trojans built a double-digit lead six minutes into the contest they would never relinquish. Paschal added 19 points on 9-for-12 shooting and dished out five assists in Mount Olive’s 88-56 win at Pfeiffer.
Paschal, who transferred from Division I East Carolina this year, is tied for third in the conference in scoring with 15.5 points per game. Her 80.2 free throw percentage is fifth best in the conference.
Mount Olive (14-7 overall, 9-4 Conference Carolinas) vaulted to third place in the conference standings after last week’s two wins. The Trojans are a game behind second-place Belmont Abbey and two games behind conference leader Limestone.
Mount Olive will have an opportunity to move into a second-place tie Thursday as the Trojans head to Belmont, N.C., to take on Belmont Abbey. The Trojans fell to Belmont Abbey 59-54 January 18 at Kornegay Arena. The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was pushed back a day due to snow throughout North Carolina. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s basketball game at 7:30 p.m.
