Hokies Preparing For Tough Game Vs. East Carolina

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer knows he will get a better gauge on where the Hokies stand this week even though they showed marked improvement last weekend.

Sure, the Hokies did more things right on offense and made fewer mistakes on special teams in their 45-3 victory against Western Carolina.

Nothing against the Catamounts, but Beamer says the Hokies (1-1) are stepping up in competition on Saturday when they play at East Carolina (2-0).

The Pirates employ a spread offense that has been effective. Quarterback Shane Carden has completed 63 of 79 passes for seven touchdowns and no interceptions, and wide receiver Justin Hardy has caught 20 passes for 227 yards and a score.

Hokies linebacker Jack Tyler says Carden's completion numbers are "absurd."
