GREENVILLE, N.C. – Chris Perrett’s RBI sac fly in the 10th inning helped Monmouth to an extra inning opening series win over East Carolina (7-5) Friday night at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
With the scored knotted at three heading to the 10th, Monmouth (3-5) played small ball to pick up just its third win in the series between the two schools. Steve Wilgus walked to start the stanza and moved to second on a sac bunt back to Jake Harris, which moved Wilgus into scoring position.
After ECU made a pitching change to bring in Drew Reynolds, Jake Gronsky singled to left field pushing Wilgus 90 feet closer to home. Perrett’s followed with a short fly ball to Ben Fultz in left and Wilgus darted towards the plate where Fultz’ throw home, which was left of the plate, was cut off by Zach Houchins allowing Wilgus to score the game-winning run.
Adam Yunginger (1-0) picked up the win in relief tossing three scoreless frames where he allowed a hit, one walk and struck out two. Starter Andrew McGee was solid in his outing scattering four hits over seven innings where he allowed three runs (all earned) with three walks and three strikeouts.
Harris (1-1) was tagged with the loss giving up one run (earned) on one hit with a walk and a strikeout in 1.1 innings. Jeff Hoffman had another solid outing working eight innings where he surrendered three runs (all earned) on six hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts. Reynolds made his sixth appearance of the season giving up a hit in two-thirds of an inning.
Monmouth took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third on Gronsky’s home run. Dan Shea led off with a single back up the middle that caromed off Hoffman’s glove. After Wilgus went down swinging, Kyle Perry was hit by a pitch, which put runners on first and second. Gronsky lifted a 2-1 inside offering over the left field wall staking the Hawks to an early lead.
ECU answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame pulling within one, 3-2. Houchins singled down the right field line with one out, moved to second on Travis Watkins’ ground out to first and landed on third on a passed ball. Bryan Bass put runners on the corners after being plunked by a pitch and Jack Reinheimer dropped down a bunt towards the third baseman scoring Houchins and pushing Bass to second. Reynolds followed with a walk to load the bases and Bass, who scored on a wild pitch during Chase McDonald’s at-bat for the second run of the frame.
McDonald’s solo blast, his first for of the season, to left field knotted the game at three in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Monmouth held ECU to a season-low five hits and snapped the Pirates four-game winning streak. Reinheimer extended his hit streak to seven games, while Bass’ 13-game streak end after going 0-for-4.
The Pirates will be back in action on Saturday, Mar. 9 with a 2 p.m. (EST) first pitch.
