East Carolina Cruises To 81-61 Win At Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. – The East Carolina women’s basketball team improved to 9-1 on the year with an 81-61 victory over Norfolk State. The Pirates were led offensively by Jada Payne’s 26-point effort in the win.

Payne narrowly missed a double-double as the redshirt sophomore forward tallied 26 points and nine rebounds to go along with one assist and one block. Redshirt junior guard Abria Trice added 19 points, six rebounds and three assists, while senior forward Kristine Mial contributed 15 points, a game-high five steals and four boards. Redshirt junior guard Kyani White dished out a game-best five assists in addition to tallying six points, two steals and one rebound.

As a team, ECU shot 49.2-percent from the field, while Norfolk State (3-6) recorded 40-percent shooting. The Spartans held the edge in rebounds with 34 to the Pirates’ 31, but East Carolina tallied 17 steals while holding NSU to just three.

East Carolina shot 56.7-percent from the field in the first half, while the Spartans posted a field goal percentage of 43.3. The game was close early on as the two teams exchanged leads three times. However, the Pirates used several runs in the first half to break the game open as they led by as many as 20 points (48-28) in the frame. Trice and Payne each posted 13 points in the half to help ECU to a 48-30 advantage over Norfolk State at halftime.

Norfolk State used a 12-3 run in the second half to cut the Pirates’ lead to 14 (58-44), but East Carolina would not back down as the Pirates rattled off nine unanswered points to push their lead back to 19 (66-47). The Pirates controlled the game as they posted a 41.9 field goal percentage in the frame, while the ECU defense limited the Spartans to 36-percent shooting. Although NSU went on a 7-0 run late in the second half, the Pirates managed to put the game away by a score of 81-61.

The Pirates’ bench out-scored the Spartans’ 29-15. ECU also took advantage of points off of turnovers as the Pirates notched 39 points to Norfolk State’s 11.

Rachel Gordon led the Spartans with 17 points and seven rebounds, but also turned the ball over five times. Logan Powell (13 points) and Rae Corbo (11 points) rounded out the rest of Norfolk State’s double-figure scorers. Corbo also added a game-high five assists and as many rebounds for the Spartans.

East Carolina will be back in action on Friday, December 20, when the Pirates play host to Ohio at 7 p.m. at Minges Coliseum. Live stats, video and audio will be available on ECUPirates.com.
