GREENVILLE, N.C. – On the first day of the inaugural Bill Carson Invitational on the campus of East Carolina University, the Pirates track and field team opened the meet with three event victories, a school record showing, and several personal bests. ECU is in first place, as the women’s squad has tallied 31 points and the men’s team has collected 25.
The Bill Carson Invitational kicked off with the women’s hammer throw and junior thrower Kayla Padgett broke her own school record as she recorded a heave of 63.50-meters (208.04-00) to win the event. The Pirates managed to claim the first four places in the hammer as Kaylee Redon placed second with a personal-best mark of 53.87-meters (176-09.00) to rank eighth all-time at ECU, Dana Keister came in third with a mark of 52.48-meters (172-02.00), and Chloe Early finished fourth with a tally of 48.68-meters (159-08.00).
Padgett came back later in the day and earned another first-place finish in the hammer throw with a tally of 50.91-meters (167-00.00). Lauren Lubarski (44.23-meters, 145-01.00) and Early (41.11-meters, 134-10.00) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Redshirt senior thrower Montrell Morrow got things going for the Pirates in the men’s hammer throw as he notched a first-place finish with a toss of 62.83-meters (206-02.00). Freshman Jalen Peterkin recorded a career-best mark of 40.63-meters (133-04.00) to finish sixth.
The men’s discus was the only event of the day in which East Carolina did not earn gold. Charlotte’s Kerrick Williams won the event with a mark of 50.59-meters (166-00.00). However, the Pirates secured second and third place as sophomore Adam Manns threw the disc 49.37-meters (163-07.00) and Morrow registered a tally of 48.93-meters (160-06.00). Thomas Lehman (40.61-meters, 133-03.00), Dylan Spadaccini (34.85-meters, 114-04.00), Alexander Mobley-Hollie (32.15-meters, 105-06.00) and Daley Hall (30.20-meters, 99-01.00) all recorded personal-best marks in the event.
East Carolina will return to action Saturday, April 12 with field events beginning at 11:30 a.m. and track events starting at 11:30 a.m. Live results will be available on ECUPirates.com
