GREENVILLE, N.C. – Brett Mabry picked up his second win of the season, while Drew Reynolds collected three hits and notched his ninth save helping East Carolina to a 4-3 win over Memphis Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
With the game tied a two-all in the seventh, ECU (22-21, 7-7 C-USA) pushed across a pair of runs for its first lead of the game at 4-2. Bryan Bass singled to start the stanza and took third on Drew Reynolds third hit of the afternoon, a single to left where he advanced to second on a throwing error. Zach Houchins loaded the bases with an intentional walk and Chase McDonald drove in the first run of the frame with a sac fly to the wall in center field plating Bass.
Ben Fultz continued the inning with an infield single to first loading the bases again with two outs for Jay Cannon, who drew a walk scoring Reynolds for the game-winning run.
Mabry (2-2) earned the win after tossing three shutout innings with one strikeout in relief. Pirate starter David Lucroy allowed a pair of runs (both earned) on three hits with seven strikeouts and four walks. Reynolds collected his 18th career save (ninth of the season) working one inning where he allowed a run on three hits.
Conner Porter (1-1) was saddled with the loss for Memphis (26-18, 9-8) after surrendering two runs (both earned) on three hits in 1.2 innings of relief. Sam Moll tossed five innings in the start allowing two runs (both earned) on seven hits with three walks and one punch-out. Blake Myers made his seventh appearance tossing the final 1.1 innings.
ECU was unable to take advantage of an early scoring threat in the first. Jack Reinheimer, who doubled to right field with one out, tried to score from second on Reynolds single to right, but Bryce Beeler delivered a strike on the throw towards home where Carter White (first baseman) made the cut off and flipped the ball to the plate recording the second out in the opening frame. Houchins made the final out on his grounder to second base.
Memphis would strike first scoring a pair of runs in the top of the third for a 2-0 advantage. Lucroy issued a leadoff walk to Beeler and gave up a second walk to Zach Willis before Ethan Gross doubled home Beeler putting the Tigers up 1-0. Willis, who took third on Gross’ fifth two-base hit of the season, would score on White’s ground out to Bass at second capping the frame.
An RBI double by Reynolds and a sac fly RBI off Houchins’ bat knotted the contest at two in the fifth. Travis Watkins got things going with a leadoff single to center and moved to second on Reinheimer’s single through the left side. Reynolds smashed a ball off the wall in right field scoring Watkins and putting runners on second and third with one out. Houchins drove in his sixth run of the week on a long fly ball to center easily scoring Reinheimer.
Memphis strung together three consecutive singles in the ninth to pull within one, 4-3, but Reynolds induced a game-ending double play to seal the victory for ECU. Willis and Gross recorded singles through the right side putting runners on the corners before White singled home Willis with base knock to center. Tucker Tubbs flew out to right field for the first out and Drew Griffin grounded into the 4-6-3 twin-killing to end the game.
ECU out hit Memphis 11-8 on the afternoon with Reynolds (three), Reinheimer (two) and Watkins (two) each recording multiple hits. Houchins continued his outstanding offensive display at the plate picking up another hit and RBI. On the week he is 8-for-12 with six RBI, four doubles and three runs scored on the week.
The Pirates will look claim its third-straight series in league play when they square off against the Tigers Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET).
