But the lead was short-lived as ODU plated four runs in the bottom half of the inning taking a 7-4 lead. P.J. Higgins led off with a double and Josiah Burney followed with a two-run shot to right field. The Monarchs added two more runs on RBI doubles by Jordan Negrini and Josh Eldridge.

Houchins cut the Monarchs lead to two, 7-5, with his solo shot to left center in the eighth inning.

The Pirates then tied the game at seven-all in the ninth using a pair of hits and an ODU error. Yorgen reached on an error and Garrett Brooks followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Joshua Lovick’s sacrifice fly plated Yorgen and Brooks scored on Dylan Brown’s single, which sent the game into extra innings.

ODU threatened in the bottom of the 12th when Burney and Taylor Ostrich laced back-to-back singles. Negrini loaded the bases when he was hit by a Reynolds pitch, but that’s all the Monarchs could muster as Reynolds recorded three quick outs to stave off the sweep.
