GREENVILLE, N.C. – Under the direction of ninth-year head coach Billy Godwin, the East Carolina baseball team held its first official team practice of the spring Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium.
After pushing practice back a day due to frigid temperatures Friday, Godwin and his coaching staff guided the Pirates through an eight-inning, three-hour intra-squad scrimmage with temperature hovering around 40 degrees. Junior Jeff Hoffman and redshirt sophomore David Lucroy each toed the rubber on the day for their respective teams. Hoffman allowed a pair of hits, struck out four and retired the first eight batters he faced over 3.2 innings. Lucroy surrendered a run on two hits with two punch-outs in three innings of work.
Senior Brett Mabry allowed a pair of runs on three hits with three walks in 1.2 innings, while fellow classmate Ryan Williams gave up a run on four hits with three strikeouts in three full frames. Sophomore Nick Durazo tossed two scoreless innings with a punch out and a walk, and senior Drew Reynolds recorded a perfect inning of relief.
Offensively the Pirates put up four runs on the day with freshmen Bryce Harman (RBI double, single, run), Kirk Morgan (single, run) and Cameron Snow combined for five of ECU’s 11 hits. Seniors Dylan Brown (single), Ben Fultz (single, walk) and Zach Houchins (single, two walks, run) tallied three hits and drew three walks, while sophomores Garrett Brooks (two walks), Luke Lowery (single) and Travis Watkins (fielders choice, RBI) each reached base.
The Pirates will open the 2014 season on Friday, Feb. 14 when they play host to James Madison. First pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. (EST).
