IRVING, Texas - For the second time this season, East Carolina junior Sarah Christian has been named the Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Week for her performances against Southern Miss last weekend.
Christian also received the weekly honor on March 10 after two complete-game victories over C-USA preseason favorite UAB. She joins Tulsa's Aimee Creger (4) and UAB's Leigh Streetman (2) as the only pitchers to earn the weekly recognition multiple times this season.
The Greenville, N.C., native earned a pair of one-hit victories, including a five-inning complete-game shutout, to lead East Carolina to a three-game sweep of Southern Miss. The junior allowed just two hits and two walks in the two outings while striking out 10 and posting a 0.70 ERA. In Sunday's series finale, her second start of the weekend, Christian was perfect through 3.2 innings before surrendering the Golden Eagles' lone hit of the game, breaking up a streak of 24-consecutive outs recorded by ECU pitching going back to the final 13 outs of Saturday's doubleheader. Southern Miss combined to hit .061 as a team over the course of the weekend with Christian in the circle.
The Pirate ace has won each of her last three starts and owns a 14-5 overall record this season with 12 complete games in 22 starts to back a 2.61 ERA. She has made 105-career starts, which is tied with Lisa Paganini (1998-01) for the seventh most in program history, while also sharing ninth place with Paganini on the all-time charts with 45 complete games.
East Carolina (20-13, 9-6 C-USA) will be back in action on Wednesday, April 9, when it makes the short trip to Raleigh for a non-conference doubleheader at NC State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m., at the Dail Softball Stadium.
