RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Mike Chiasson is carrying on his late father's legacy on the ice this week with the Carolina Hurricanes.
The son of NHL veteran Steve Chiasson is taking part in the Hurricanes' development camp for rookies and college players.
Mike Chiasson is a 22-year-old defenseman at Michigan. He was invited to camp by Carolina vice president of hockey operations Ron Francis. He and the elder Chiasson played for the Hurricanes in 1998-99.
Steve Chiasson was killed in a single-vehicle accident in north Raleigh on May 3, 1999.
The Chiasson name still carries weight here. His framed No. 3 jersey hangs in the dressing room near a plaque that honors the Steve Chiasson Award winners, given each year by the Carolina players to a teammate who shows determination and dedication.
