Canes, Gerbe Agree To 1-Year, 2-Way Deal

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to terms with free agent left wing Nathan Gerbe on a one-year contract.

The team said Friday that Gerbe will make $550,000 on the NHL level or $150,000 if he is sent to the minors with a guarantee of at least $250,000.

The 26-year-old had five goals and five assists in 42 games with Buffalo last season. He averaged about 12½ minutes of ice time.

He was the Most Outstanding Player at the 2008 Frozen Four while leading Boston College to a national championship.

Team vice president of hockey operations Ron Francis says Gerbe "has had success on the NHL level" and will compete for a job in training camp.
