Canes GM: Pitkanen Could Miss Start Of Season

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford says injured defenseman Joni Pitkanen might not be ready to start the season.

Rutherford said Tuesday that Pitkanen is due to arrive in Raleigh later this week and will have a CT scan on his left heel.

Pitkanen broke his heel in April in a game against Washington when he raced down the ice in an attempt to beat an icing call. The injury cost him the final 13 games of the season.

The veteran defenseman has 57 career goals and 225 assists in nine NHL seasons and has spent the past five years with Carolina.
