Mets Fail To Extend Lead In N.L. East

The Washington Nationals cut into the New York Mets' division lead by rolling to a 13-4 rout at Shea Stadium. The outcome leaves the first-place Mets with a two-game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East with six games to play.

Austin Kearns and pinch-hitter Ryan Langerhans each hit three-run homers as the Nationals beat the Mets for the third time in four games since last Monday. Ronnie Belliard also drove in three runs to help Matt Chico earn his first road win of the season.

Chico gave up nine hits but only three runs over five and a-third. He outpitched Mike Pelfrey, who's 3-and-8 after surrendering six earned runs, five hits and five walks in five and two-thirds.

Mets outfielder Moises Alou doubled to extend his team-record hitting streak to 28 games.
