Chapel Hill - More than one Carolina sports team pulled
off a stunning upset this weekend.
Appalachian State grabbed the headlines with its unexpected
34-32 win over Michigan, but women's soccer circles are abuzz today
over what South Carolina did to the mighty Tar Heels.
The Gamecocks handed the top-ranked, defending national
championship North Carolina team a 1-0 upset yesterday, for the Tar
Heels' first loss in a home opener in the 29 years of the program.
Erin Sullivan kicked home the winning goal 15:20 into the game.
Midfielder Ashley Kirk says the team spent the offseason talking
about this moment. She says, ever time the South Carolina squad
held early workouts, ran or trained, they thought about the opener.
She says, "It pushed us since the end of last year."
