Charlotte Independence Has 7 Year Win Streak Snapped

The streak is over.
Charlotte's Independence High School ended its seven-year,
109-game winning run at a tournament in Cincinnati last night,
losing 41-34 to Cincinnati Elder.
The North Carolina school amassed the nation's longest high
school winning streak and was the first team to win seven straight
state championships. The Patriots hadn't lost since falling 34-31
to Shelby Crest on Sept. 1, 2000.
The Panthers forced overtime with a 1-yard TD run by Nick Gramke
with 35 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Johnny Groene tossed a
14-yard touchdown pass to Josh Jones in overtime to give Elder the
win, and Keith Hamberg sealed it with an interception.

Greenville's J.H. Rose now has the state's longest win streak which was pushed to 39 games Friday night.
