Division I-AA powerhouse Appalachian State stunned a packed house of 109,000 at Michigan Stadium with a huge upset on the first Saturday of the college football season.
The two-time defending Division I-AA champs upset fifth-ranked
Michigan 34-32 in the season opener. The Penguins led for most of
the game but it appeared the Wolverines had avoided the upset on
Mike Hart's 54-yard touchdown run with 4:36 left.
But Julian Rauch kicked a 24-yard field goal with 26
seconds left to put Appalachian State on top again. Then Corey
Lynch blocked a 37-yard field goal attempt, recovered the ball and
ran out the clock to complete the stunning upset.
